Cloud & Multi-Cloud Deployment Models

Technical analysis covering the three most common infrastructure configurations in our deployment portfolio — evaluated for the operational realities of Kenyan classrooms.

VDI on GCP — DDP Protocol over Cloud

Scenario

vCloudPoint V1 zero clients connect remotely to the vMatrix Server Manager running on a Windows VM hosted inside Google Cloud Platform (GCP) via the Dynamic Desktop Protocol (DDP).

Technical Analysis

Since 100% of screen rendering, audio, and keystrokes are transmitted over the network, hosting the server on GCP requires a high-speed, stable fibre connection. For schools with constrained internet, we strongly recommend our on-premises vCloudPoint Server connected to a local Gigabit Ethernet switch backplane — which is our standard deployment model.

Benefit

Centralised image management, zero local server maintenance. Best suited for urban schools with dedicated fibre and sub-20ms latency to the GCP region.

Google Workspace on Windows RDS Lab

Scenario

Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Classroom, Gemini) accessed entirely through Google Chrome on the Windows Server session — rendered on the dual Xeon and projected to zero-client endpoints via DDP.

Technical Analysis

Google Workspace is a cloud-based SaaS platform. In a vCloud VDI Smart Lab, students open Google Chrome on their virtual desktops and log directly into their Google Workspace accounts. Because browser processing is handled centrally by the server's Dual Xeon processors and 64GB RAM, Google Workspace runs fast and smoothly for all 30 students simultaneously.

Benefit

Lower endpoint cost (zero-client vs Chromebook), centralised browser management, works with existing Windows Server CALs. Full Google for Education suite without requiring Chromebook hardware.

Microsoft 365 Education on ChromeOS

Scenario

M365 A1 Education license (free cloud tier for qualifying schools) provisioned on Acer Chromebooks managed under the Google Admin Console. Students run full web-based Office apps natively in Chrome.

Technical Analysis

This is our recommended cloud-managed deployment path for schools that prefer Google's management simplicity but want students to build Microsoft Office fluency. Students open Google Chrome on their Chromebooks, log in to Microsoft Teams, and run web-based Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote — all at zero licensing cost (KES 0). Student identities are managed through Google Cloud Identity with SAML federation to Azure AD.

Benefit

Zero Windows licensing cost. Full Office suite via browser. Offline PWA support. Google Cloud Identity ↔ Azure AD federation for unified login. Best of both ecosystems at KES 0.

Microsoft vs. Google — How We Deploy Both

The Shule Project is ecosystem-agnostic. We deploy Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace side by side, choosing the right toolchain for each school's operational context.

Do all vCloud Devices run on Windows?

No, but the central host server does. Under the RDS VDI model, the vCloudPoint Server runs Windows Server. However, the student zero clients themselves have no local operating system. When a student boots their zero client, it connects via vMatrix Server Manager to launch an isolated virtual desktop hosted on the server. This virtual desktop can run Windows 11 Pro for Education, inside of which students can launch Google Chrome or Microsoft Office web apps.

Can vCloud Devices run on Google Cloud?

Yes. vCloudPoint V1 zero clients connect remotely to the server using the Dynamic Desktop Protocol (DDP).
